Vastenavond is de aanduiding voor carnaval, het feest dat voorafgaat aan de veertigdaagse vasten voor Pasen, met name gevierd in rooms-katholieke landen en streken. Vermommingen, optochten, de oprichting van een narrenrijk en uitbundige feesten. Rood, geel, groen is de kleur van 'vastelaovend'.

Shrove Tuesday is the name for Carnival, the festival that precedes the forty-day Lent before Easter, mainly celebrated in Roman Catholic countries and regions. Disguises, parades, the creation of a kingdom of fools and lavish parties. Red, yellow, green is the color of 'vastelaovend'.
